Her instructions to herself were short: write the date of the first frost, and one sentence about the morning. The first entry says the sun came up like a pale coin and nobody was awake but her and a hare. She never missed a year. Now, on the first white morning, a cloth is tied to the Frost Post and the valley walks out at sunrise in its coats. The orchard puts away its ladders, and the lodge lights its first fire. The meadow, the rails and the bare oak are on this mug, a quiet morning to keep.
